Pancharanga Kshetrams, also known as the Pancharanga Kshetras, are five revered temples associated with Lord Ranganatha, the majestic reclining form of Lord Vishnu. These sacred temples are traditionally connected with the course of the River Kaveri and form a unique pilgrimage circuit across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The five temples traditionally included in this circuit are:
- Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple – Srirangapatna, Karnataka
- Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple – Srirangam, Tamil Nadu
- Sarangapani Temple – Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu
- Sri Appakkudathan Temple – Koviladi, near Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu
- Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple – Indalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu
The Pancharanga pilgrimage offers devotees an opportunity to experience the different manifestations and traditions surrounding Lord Vishnu in the sacred Kaveri region.
What Are the Pancharanga Kshetrams?
The word Pancharanga can be understood as:
- Pancha – Five
- Ranga – referring to Lord Ranganatha
Thus, Pancharanga Kshetrams refers to a group of five sacred Ranga temples.
Lord Ranganatha is worshipped in a reclining posture, resting upon Adisesha, the divine serpent. The reclining form of Vishnu symbolizes the Lord’s eternal presence, protection and divine repose.
The Kaveri River plays an important role in the spiritual geography of these temples. Srirangapatna and Srirangam, in particular, are associated with river islands formed by the Kaveri and its branches.
The pilgrimage gradually moves from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, following the sacred landscape of the Kaveri basin.
1. Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple – Srirangapatna, Karnataka
The Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple at Srirangapatna is one of the most important Vishnu temples in Karnataka and the first major temple in the Pancharanga pilgrimage tradition.
Srirangapatna is a historic island town situated on the River Kaveri, near Mysuru. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, who is worshipped in a reclining posture on Adisesha.
The temple is also popularly known as Srirangapatna Ranganatha Swamy Temple.
Spiritual Significance
The temple represents the northernmost Ranga Kshetra in this traditional Pancharanga circuit.
For pilgrims travelling from Karnataka toward Tamil Nadu, Srirangapatna provides a natural beginning to the Pancharanga pilgrimage.
What Makes Srirangapatna Special?
- Ancient Vaishnava temple
- Located on the Kaveri River island
- Dedicated to Lord Ranganatha
- Important pilgrimage centre near Mysuru
- Associated with the traditional Pancharanga circuit .
2. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple – Srirangam, Tamil Nadu
From Srirangapatna, the Pancharanga pilgrimage continues southward to Srirangam, one of the most important Vaishnava pilgrimage centres in India.
The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam, is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha and is one of the most revered temples in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Srirangam is located on an island between the Kaveri River and the Kollidam, a major branch of the Kaveri.
The enormous temple complex, magnificent gopurams, multiple prakarams and rich Vaishnava traditions make Srirangam one of the greatest temple destinations in South India.
Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam
Lord Ranganatha is seen reclining on Adisesha, facing south. The temple has an extraordinary theological and historical importance in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Srirangam is also one of the 108 Divya Desams revered by the Alvars.
Why Srirangam Is Special
- One of India’s greatest Vishnu temples
- One of the 108 Divya Desams
- Major centre of Sri Vaishnavism
- Sacred island between the Kaveri and Kollidam
- Home of the magnificent Lord Ranganatha
For devotees undertaking a 108 Divya Desam pilgrimage, Srirangam is an essential destination.
3. Sarangapani Temple – Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu
The third important destination in the Pancharanga tradition is Sarangapani Temple at Kumbakonam.
The presiding deity is Lord Sarangapani, also known as Aravamudhan. The Lord is worshipped in a reclining form and is associated with the sacred traditions of the Kaveri region.
Sarangapani Temple is also one of the 108 Divya Desams.
The Name Sarangapani
The name Sarangapani is associated with the Lord holding the divine bow Sharanga.
The temple is one of the most important Vaishnava temples of Kumbakonam and forms an important part of a pilgrimage through the Chola Nadu region.
Spiritual Importance
The temple is particularly significant because devotees can combine the Pancharanga pilgrimage with several other important temples around Kumbakonam.
A pilgrimage to Sarangapani Temple can therefore be incorporated into:
Pancharanga Kshetrams + Chola Nadu Divya Desams + Kumbakonam Temple Circuit
4. Sri Appakkudathan Temple – Koviladi, Near Tiruchirappalli
The fourth temple is Sri Appakkudathan Temple at Koviladi, near Tiruchirappalli.
The temple is also known as Thirupper Nagar, and the presiding deity is Appakkudathan Perumal.
The Lord is worshipped in a reclining posture.
The Story of Appakkudathan
A beautiful legend is associated with the temple.
According to temple tradition, King Upamanyu was cursed and was seeking relief. Lord Vishnu appeared before him in the form of an elderly Brahmin and asked for food.
The king prepared a large quantity of appam, a traditional sweet preparation, and offered it to the Lord.
Pleased with the king’s devotion and offering, Lord Vishnu granted him relief from the curse.
Because of this sacred legend, the Lord came to be known as Appakkudathan.
Divya Desam Significance
Thirupper Nagar is one of the 108 Divya Desams.
The temple therefore has a special place not only in the Pancharanga pilgrimage but also in a broader Divya Desam pilgrimage of Tamil Nadu.
5. Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple – Indalur, Mayiladuthurai
The fifth temple in the Pancharanga pilgrimage is the Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple at Indalur, near Mayiladuthurai.
The temple is also known as Thiruvindalur.
The presiding deity is Lord Parimala Ranganatha, who is worshipped in a reclining posture.
This ancient temple is another important Divya Desam and forms part of the rich Vaishnava heritage of the Kaveri delta.
Spiritual Significance
The temple represents the southern end of this Pancharanga pilgrimage tradition.
The region around Mayiladuthurai is particularly important for devotees undertaking the Chola Nadu Divya Desam pilgrimage, as numerous ancient Vishnu temples are located in and around the Kaveri delta.
Pancharanga Kshetrams and the Sacred Kaveri
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Pancharanga pilgrimage is its connection with the River Kaveri.
The Kaveri has been revered for centuries as one of South India’s sacred rivers. Its fertile delta became an important centre of temple culture, literature, agriculture and Vaishnavism.
The five Ranga temples provide a spiritual journey through this sacred landscape:
Karnataka Srirangapatna
Tamil Nadu Srirangam
Kumbakonam Koviladi
Indalur Mayiladuthurai
This makes the Pancharanga circuit not merely a temple tour, but a journey through the sacred geography of the Kaveri.
Pancharanga Kshetrams and the 108 Divya Desams
An especially attractive feature of this pilgrimage is that several of the temples are also part of the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred Vishnu temples glorified in the devotional hymns of the Alvars.
Among the Pancharanga temples:
- Srirangam – Divya Desam
- Sarangapani, Kumbakonam – Divya Desam
- Appakkudathan, Koviladi – Divya Desam
- Parimala Ranganatha, Indalur – Divya Desam
This creates an excellent opportunity for devotees to combine two pilgrimage traditions.
Pancharanga Kshetrams + Chola Nadu Divya Desams
Rather than visiting the five temples independently, devotees interested in Vaishnava pilgrimage can design a longer journey incorporating other important Divya Desams in Tamil Nadu.
This can be particularly meaningful for devotees travelling from outside India who want to cover several sacred temples during one visit.
