Sri Mookambika Devi Temple Kollur Story, History, Darshan Timings & Pilgrimage Guide

Sri Mookambika Devi Temple  Kollur

Where the Goddess of Wisdom, Power & Compassion Blesses All With an Open Heart

Introduction   A Temple Born From the Prayers of Saints and Protected by the Goddess Herself

Deep within the lush Western Ghats, where mist floats over emerald forests and the Souparnika River glides like a silver ribbon, lies one of India’s most mystical Shakti Kshetras
Sri Mookambika Devi Temple, Kollur.

This is not just a temple.
It is a sacred destination where:

  • Rishis performed tapas for centuries
  • Adi Shankaracharya received divine vision
  • The Goddess defeated a demon with silence itself
  • Devotees from Kerala, Karnataka, and worldwide feel a mother’s embrace

Here, the Devi is not limited to one form.
She is Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati   all three Shaktis fused into one radiant Murti.

Welcome to Kollur Mookambika
the temple where every prayer feels heard.

The Divine Legend The Fall of Mookasura

Once, a demon named Kaumasura terrorized the world.
Rishis sought refuge in the forests of Kollur, performing intense penance to seek protection.

When the demon tried to disrupt their tapas, the Mother Goddess intervened.

The story goes:

  • The rishis prayed to Parashurama, who invoked Shakti.
  • The Goddess appeared and struck the demon mute —
thus he became Mookasura (“one who cannot speak”).
  • Unable to chant mantras or perform black rituals, his powers vanished.
  • With a final roar, the Devi stormed into battle and destroyed him.

Thus, she was revered as:

Mookambika  The Mother Who Silenced Evil

The very spot where she ended Mookasura’s tyranny became her eternal abode — Kollur.

Adi Shankaracharya and the Swayambhu Jyotirlinga

Adi Shankaracharya, during his travels, prayed to the Devi to follow him to Kerala.

She agreed, but on one condition:
Shankaracharya should lead without turning back.

At Kollur, he sensed her footsteps had stopped.
Turning around, he saw the Devi in all her glory —
no longer willing to move forward.

So he consecrated a Swayambhu Linga known as the:

jyotirlinga Roopa   A Unified Form of Shiva & Shakti

This is the unique feature of Mookambika:
It is both a Shakti Peeth and a Jyotirlinga.

Divine energy from both Shiva and the Mother resides here.

Inside the Temple   A Serene Glow of Shakti

The Main Sanctum (Garbha Griha)

The Devi sits in a majestic posture, adorned with gold, flowers, and sacred ornaments.

She embodies:

  • Prosperity (Mahalakshmi)
  • Wisdom (Mahasaraswati)

Devotees believe she grants:

  • Education
  • Clarity
  • Peace

  • Protection
  • Prosperity

Families often bring children here to begin their learning journey with the ritual of Vidyarambham.

The Souparnika River  A River with Mythical Origins

The sacred river flowing near the temple is said to have been blessed by Garuda (Suparna).

Its waters are believed to:

  • Remove doshas
  • Cleanse the mind
  • Cure ailments
  • Purify karma

Many devotees take a gentle dip or wash hands and face as a symbolic purification.

Kodachadri Hill   The Birthplace of the Goddess’s Power

Just 20 km from Kollur lies Kodachadri, one of Karnataka’s most beautiful peaks.

It is believed that:

  • The Devi first appeared here
  • Adi Shankaracharya meditated here
  • A flame still burns undisturbed at “Sarvajna Peetha”

The trek offers breathtaking views of forests, clouds, and golden sunsets.

For spiritual travelers, Kodachadri is not a sightseeing spot,
it is a journey into divine silence.
